There Are Plenty Of These

I’ve got lots of these under the soil surface:

Weeds

Some have been there before I took on the plot at the start of 2007, and others have returned since I dug a lot out last year. Novice mistake last year …don’t let weeds grow back !

Ground looks better without the grass like weed though:

Weeded Beds

    Hello john,
i can see that you have uncovered your new friend for life, ground elder.
You will come to cherish them in time…
(and maybe with a touch of crouch grass…)
The good news are that they both are easier to dig out in the winter, the roots seem to be less breakable, and easy to spot, as they are white.
Soon you will be able to recognise any weed by its roots!
for info, nettles are pink and yellow…
Happy digging and see you on the plot (42, lane 2)

This is a good site to iddentify weeds:
    http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/weeds.htm
and this one shows pictures of them when they are still tiny:

Most weeds are edible, so if you at anytime feel overwelmed, consider them to be an over-successful crop…works for 10 mins…
And the one called “Fat Hen” tastes wonderful, young and old leaves can go in salad to add a nutty taste.
It is an annual, therefore of minimal bother:
